Bali Cheat Sheet - Some of My Best Tips & Tricks for Travelling to Bali

Last updated December 2024

Whether it's your 1st or 20th time visiting Bali, these links and services are always good to have on hand. I try to update this page as often as possible.
___________
BEFORE YOU READ THE REST OF THIS, MAKE SURE YOUR PASSPORTS HAVE AT LEAST 6 MONTH'S VALIDITY FROM THE DATE YOU PLAN TO DEPART BALI.
___________________________

Requirements before departure:

  • Mpox Health Pass Form
  • Tourist Tax Levy - pay and it will be linked to your passport
  • Electronic Visa On Arrival (you can do VOA at the airport, just easier to have it done beforehand...see below for more info).
  • Online customs form - get QR code ready for customs (after baggage collection)...see below for more info.
  • Have your return plane ticket handy because you will be asked to show this when you check in on the way to Bali.

Apps I recommend to have downloaded:

WhatsApp (all comms within Bali - restaurants, bookings, transport etc.)
Go Jek
Grab

I use Grab daily when I am in Bali mainly for food and grocery deliveries. Forgot toothpaste? For a $1-$2 delivery fee you can have it at your door within ten minutes!

I also prefer to book a Grab than hail a cab. There are usually plenty available, so you are never waiting long and there is an option to record the audio of the trip for an extra layer of safety. I have never felt unsafe in a Grab. If you choose to get a Taxi, make sure it's a genuine Blue Bird or they will try to rip you off.

  • Transport within Bali (bike, small car or large car)
  • Food delivery
  • Grocery delivery
  • Pharmacy delivery

      Indonesia E-Sim - Airalo

You no longer need to get a physical Sim when you arrive in Bali.

You can purchase an e-sim activate it when you arrive. Save a heap of $$$ on data and always have access to the internet without relying on free Wifi. e.g. 1GB for $US5.50 up to 20GB for $US40.

I travel a lot and so I purchase a global one with 365 days expiry so I can use it wherever I go, but you can choose the country or region that you are travelling to. Make sure to do all of the set up before you travel so that once you arrive all you have to do it switch data off for your main line and switch the e-sim on.

Here is a quick video showing how to set it up on your phone, because it can be a bit confusing the first time.

I leave the laundry at reception. They will pick it up and send you an invoice. I have the money ready at reception so they are paid and can leave it with reception in case I am out.
I usually choose the 6 hour option which is 900,000 ($9 AUD) for up to 5kgs. I use the 3 hour service on my last day to ensure I have it back in time for my flight. There is also a 24 hour option which is cheaper.

E-VOA (Visa on Arrival)....easiest to purchase before travel

      E-VOA

      • I have just learned that you do not require a separate email address for all travellers (my goodness that would have saved me hours, you can complete one adult and then batch applications).
      • Once you have created an account, you can also go into the visa if you wish to extend (beyond the 30 days for an additional 30 days). You can only extend one and the cost is $50 (same as entry cost). It is very easy to do and you do not need to pay for an immigration lawyer or other provider to handle your visa or visa extension anymore.
      • E-gates have been introduced for fast immigration. 6 + years and older can use the E-gates.

Online Customs Declaration (must be completed online)

      Bali Customs Declaration

Click here to complete your declaration form online (do it now so you don't have to do it at DPS airport) ...you'll thank me later. You just need to have the QR code ready to show on your phone to be scanned when you go through customs.

      Tourist Tax Levy Fee

The Tourist Tax Levy must be paid for everyone, regardless of age. For each traveller you will need to enter their passport number. The price is 150,000 IDR each (approx. $15AUD)

Click here to pay your tourist levy.
