5 Things I'd Never Do on a Plane

Flying can be an exciting part of any trip, but it's essential to be aware of certain dos and don’ts to ensure a comfortable and pleasant journey. As a mum of two and the owner of Kooshy Kids, I’ve learned some valuable tips that can make air travel smoother for everyone. Here are five things I’d never do on a plane to keep my travel experience as smooth as possible.

1. Forget to Secure My Valuables

It’s easy to get complacent while travelling, but I never let my guard down when it comes to my valuables. Keeping my passport, wallet, and other important documents secure is a top priority.

I use the secret compartment in my backpack to store cash, passports, home keys, etc.

  • Tip: Use a travel wallet with RFID protection to prevent electronic theft. Keep this wallet close to you at all times, especially during security checks and boarding.
2. Ignore My Health and Wellbeing

Maintaining health and wellbeing during a flight is often overlooked. I always pack a small health kit that includes items like motion sickness tablets, nasal spray, and a sleep mask. Being prepared for any minor health issues that might arise can make the flight much more pleasant.

I never forget my Kooshy Kids Inflatable Neck Pillow for added comfort and to avoid neck strain during long flights. It’s important to listen to your body and address any discomfort promptly.

  • Tip: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoid too much caffeine or alcohol. Stretch and move around the cabin periodically to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
3. Neglect Personal Hygiene

Maintaining personal hygiene is crucial, especially in the close quarters of an aircraft. I always pack a small toiletry kit with essentials like hand sanitiser, roll-on deodorant, face wipes, hairbrush, face mist, moisturiser, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. Freshening up during long-haul flights can make a world of difference in how I feel upon landing. Additionally, using sanitiser wipes to clean my tray table and armrests can help minimise exposure to germs.

  • Tip: Bring a small pack of antibacterial wipes to clean surfaces before use. This is particularly useful when travelling with kids, who tend to touch everything.
4. Rely Solely on In-Flight Entertainment

While in-flight entertainment can be a great way to pass the time, I never rely on it entirely. It's wise to bring my own sources of entertainment, such as a good book, downloaded movies, or music playlists. I also ensure my devices are fully charged and bring a portable charger just in case. This way, I have control over what I watch or listen to and am not disappointed if the in-flight options are limited or not to my taste.

A week before I travel, I download a heap of shows on all of the family’s iPads from Netflix – enough to last for the entire flight.

  • Tip: Pack noise-cancelling headphones to enhance your entertainment experience and reduce ambient noise, making it easier to relax or sleep.
5. Overpack My Carry-On

Overpacking a carry-on bag can lead to unnecessary stress and discomfort. I make it a point to pack only the essentials and keep my bag organised. This approach not only makes it easier to find what I need during the flight, but also ensures that my bag fits comfortably in the overhead compartment or under the seat.

  • Tip: Use packing cubes to organise your carry-on and avoid overstuffing. Ensure you leave some space for any items you might need to quickly access, like snacks, a book, or your kids' favourite toys.
Additional Tips for Travelling with Kids
  1. Prepare Snacks and Meals Packing healthy snacks and meals for your kids can prevent hunger-induced meltdowns. Opt for non-messy, easy-to-eat options like fruit slices, cheese sticks, and crackers.
  • Tip: Avoid sugary snacks to prevent sugar rushes and subsequent crashes. Bring an empty reusable water bottle to fill up after passing through security.
  1. Dress in Layers Airplane cabins can be unpredictable in terms of temperature. Dress your kids in layers to ensure they are comfortable throughout the flight.
  • Tip: Pack a lightweight blanket or shawl for added warmth if needed. The Kooshy Kids Kooshion is perfect for keeping little ones cosy.
  1. Familiarise Kids with Flying If your children are new to flying, talk to them about what to expect. Explain the security process, the noise during takeoff, and the need to stay seated with seatbelts fastened.
  • Tip: Bring a few small, new toys to surprise and occupy them during the flight. Familiar items like their favourite stuffed animal or blanket can also provide comfort.
  1. Plan for Ear Pressure Takeoff and landing can cause ear discomfort due to changes in cabin pressure. For babies, breastfeeding or a pacifier can help. For older kids, chewing gum or sucking on lollipops works well.
  • Tip: Encourage your kids to yawn or swallow frequently during these times to help equalise ear pressure.
  1. Respect Other Passengers Teaching your children to be considerate of other passengers can go a long way in making the flight pleasant for everyone. Encourage quiet play, no kicking of seats, and polite behaviour.
  • Tip: Pack headphones for your kids to use with their devices to keep noise levels down.

Avoiding these common mistakes and following these additional tips can significantly enhance your flight experience, making it more comfortable and enjoyable for you and your family. With a touch of preparation and mindfulness, you’ll make air travel smoother and more pleasant for everyone on board.

Safe travels and happy flying!
