How to Build your Qantas Frequent Flyer Point Balance
How to Build your Qantas Frequent Flyer Point Balance
You asked for it, here it is. All of my secret tips to earning LOTS and LOTS of Qantas Frequent Flyer points.
With well over a million points, I have become very good at earning points on the ground...here's how.
1. Qantas American Express
Without a doubt the best way to accumulate points quickly and regularly is with a good Qantas Credit Card. I have the Qantas American Express which gives you the most bang for your buck.
This card gives you 1.25 points for every $1 spent AS A MINIMUM. Points are transferred from your card to your Qantas account automatically each month.
I use the card for absolutely everything from small purchases (fuel, groceries) to large purchases (cars, TVs, phones etc). I put my savings into the card so it's always well above my credit limit (I rarely even use the "credit" part of it). I also use it for my business purchases. You can link your PayPal to it, which makes it even easier to use and earn points.
There is an annual fee of $450 which you get back in Qantas credit. Membership also includes free travel insurance, invitations into the Qantas Club Lounge, American Express Lounge and a complimentary Qantas Wine membership .
You can have an additional 4 cardholders so that everyone in your family is helping you to earn points.
They regularly have offers and ways to earn extra points. Recently they offered me 5000 bonus points for signing up to BP rewards and then an additional 5000 points once I spent money at BP on fuel.
I also have a NAB Qantas Visa which I use for when Amex isn't accepted. The points aren't as good, but it's definitely better than not earning any points.
They have a referral program where you can earn a bonus 30,000 points if you refer a friend! Click here for my code link...if you sign up, you'll get 100,000 points!
2. Qantas Wine
Buying your booze via Qantas Wine is a great way to earn lots of points and since Christmas is around the corner, it's a great time to stock up for yourself and for gifts.
You can get a Qantas Wine Membership and earn 3 bonus points per dollar PLUS they often have bonuses. I only ever buy cases of wine that come with bonus points (usually between 10,000-25,000 bonus points).
For example: a case of wine might be $350 and is offering 25,000 bonus points.
You would get $350 x 3 = 1050 points + 25,000 points =26,050 points PLUS if you pay using your Qantas American Express you would get an additional 437 points. That's a potential 26,487 points for a case of wine that you can gift someone....that's a flight or two right there!
STOCK UP!
3. Qantas Hotels & Air BNB
If you are looking to book accommodation have a look via the Qantas App. They have access to great specials and also offer up to 6 points per dollar spent as well as promotional bonus points. Once again, if you use your Qantas American Express you could potentially be earning 7.25 points per dollar plus bonus points.
4. The Qantas Online Mall
The Qantas Mall is a great way of earning points through purchases that you would be making anyway.
Shopping through the App, tracks your purchases and then credits you the points. The usual amount is 1-5 points per dollar, however brands will often have promotions and offer up to 30 points per dollar spent...plus there are always offers for bonus points!
The list of participating brands is huge....make a note of who they are and make sure to shop with them using the App. Don't forget to use your Qantas Amex for the additional 1.25 points!

5. Sign up your kids!
It's free for kids to join the Qantas Frequent Flyer Joey program and children of any age could earn Qantas Points on flights (so long as they are not travelling on an infant fare and have their own seat). Kids aged 3-11 who join the Frequent Flyer program receive a welcome pack, including their own Joey Club passport.
You are then able to do a family transfer from their account to yours!
6. Everyday Woolworths Rewards
I recommend linking your Everyday Woolworths Rewards card to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account. 2000 Woolworths points will give you 1000 Qantas Points.
Look out for points booster offers and if you haven't already, make the switch from Coles to Woolies because Fly Buys are a huge disappointment!
7. Others
- Link your Uber account to your QFF and earn points per dollar spent. Also, if you join Ubers Rewards program you can turn their loyalty points in QFF points.
- Book your hire car through Qantas using Avis or Budget...it's 3 points per dollar.
- Download the Qantas Well-Being App and get an instant 1500 points when you start any exercise.
- If you have a business join Qantas Business Rewards. It's a way to double up the points that you earn and also earn points from others.
Points only expire after 18 months if there is no activity. For as little as a $5 spend every 17 months, you are extending the life of ALL of your points!
Okay, now that you know how to earn points, how will you spend them?
What do I use my points for?
TRAVEL OF COURSE! Sometimes there are offers that are too good not to use, pre Covid, I was getting to Bali one way for only 25,000 points + tax!
I also use them to upgrade. In 2019 I flew to New York with the kids and we were all upgraded to Business Class both ways. The kids having a flat bed and space to play was a dream and a big step up from using their Kooshy Kids Kooshion (which of course we still love).
On my honeymoon I was upgraded to First Class from LA to Melbourne and let me tell you, it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life!
I hope that these tips have been helpful and that you too will build up your points and be able to use them to have some amazing adventures!
